Overview
TND is a Hearts of Iron IV mod that starts the world on 1 January 2000, with modern borders, 2000-era leaders and parties, new countries, and a tech tree re-dated to run from 1970 to 2030. The companion wiki at thenewdawn.wiki is generated from the mod's own files, so it describes what the game actually does.
The problem
A lot of Hearts of Iron IV modern-day mods are very overcomplicated, so some friends and I wanted to make something fun.
What I did
- Generated most of the mod's content with Python, about 180 scripts in
tools/, including roughly 55 per-country focus-tree generators. Each generated file names its generator, and changes go into the generator rather than the output. - Wrote a rebuild chain that regenerates the trees, then runs a lint step that catches errors the game would otherwise only report in its log.
- Built the state, leader, party, advisor and commander data, with state owners and cores set for 1 January 2000 and new countries such as Palestine, Abkhazia and Somaliland.
- Re-dated and renamed the tech tree, added the modern doctrines (25 renamed and re-described, 7 with matching buffs) and late-game wargoals for ten tree countries.
- Wrote focus-tree tooling: a layout audit for far exclusives and long lines, a PNG preview renderer, and a pace tool for focus costs.
- Built the wiki as a Nuxt site that an exporter generates from the mod, with country pages, path guides, mechanic guides, a timeline and a changelog, deployed on Vercel.
- Set up TND-workspace, a shared repo with cross-project rules and scripts for syncing into the game's mod folder, rebuilding, and shipping. It also has a smoke test that launches the game and checks the logs.
Stack
- Hearts of Iron IV script, localisation and mod descriptor files (game version 1.19.x)
- Python for generators, audits and the smoke test
- Nuxt 4, Nuxt UI 4 (Tailwind CSS 4), Nuxt Content 3 and TypeScript for the wiki
- Vercel for hosting, GitHub for source
Outcome / impact
- The mod is in active development: 392 commits in the mod repo, with the latest content changes on 31 Oct and 1 Nov 2026.
- The wiki has 61 commits and about 100 pages, and is live at thenewdawn.wiki.
- Not yet on the Steam Workshop. The wiki shows a "coming soon" badge until the link is set.
- It is not public yet.
